Events and Marketing Manager
Salary £27,000 pro rata to 4 or 5 days per week
Truman Books is an independent bookshop and café in Farsley, West Leeds. It is a general bookshop, selling adult and children’s books, a carefully curated selection of gifts, and excellent coffee and cakes for consumption on the premises.
We are looking for a capable, creative and ambitious events and marketing manager to take ownership of our busy events programme, creating and managing an exciting, eclectic and profitable programme of adult and school events, and manage the marketing of events and the bookshop itself in-store and through channels such as social media, email and print.
Responsibilities include:
Events:
- Build relationships with publicists to ensure we are front of mind when planning book tours
- Keep on top of publication schedules in order to pro-actively pitch for events
- Liaise with events venues / schools to book in events where necessary
- Organise chair for each event – this may sometimes be the Events Manager, or may be an appropriate third party
- Upload events onto the Truman Books website, and other platforms where appropriate
- Monitor and report on sales
- Create marketing campaigns to publicise events – this could involve but is not limited to creating digital assets, physical posters / leaflets / flyers, social media, press releases and media liaison, email marketing. Particular focus to be given to increasing the reach of marketing beyond West Leeds.
- Maintain communication with the publicist, author and venue in the lead up to the event to ensure that everyone has all the information they need
- Arrange adequate staffing for the event
- Order books in good time for the event, and arrange returns of surplus books after the event, aiming to minimise returns
- Manage events on the night, or arrange for an appropriate deputy.
- Manage the P&L of each event aiming to maximise profitability
- Provide regular reporting on revenue raised
- Build relationships with external venues to ensure Truman Books is first choice for bookselling at external organised events
- Explore opportunities for staging larger events with capacity of 250+
Marketing:
Manage the marketing of the bookshop and our events programme via various channels including in-store, email, social media and print, with a view to increasing reach and engagement.
- Create engaging, platform appropriate social media content
- Develop a regular email newsletter
- Measure and report on the effectiveness of these activities
Skills and Experience needed:
- Excellent organisation skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously to a deadline
- Excellent communication skills – written and verbal, with the ability to build relationships at all levels
- Level-headed and calm under pressure
- Friendly, outgoing, approachable personality
- Able to work independently, and be self-motivating
- Attention to detail is key.
- Commercially astute, with the ability use spreadsheets to model event profitability
This is a hybrid role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend at least two half days per week in the bookshop, with the remainder of the time working from home. There will be the requirement to work some evenings and weekends where necessary.
