A Special Family Storytime with Tom Palmer
August 12 @ 10:30 – 11:30
Join us for a special, family edition of Storytime with children’s author Tom Palmer. It’s one for animal lovers and those intrigued by true tales. Come and hear Tom read from his new book ‘War Dog’ and find out more about Judy, the furry, four-legged hero of WWII.
This super Storytime session will see author Tom read from his beautiful, new picture book that is testament to the love and loyalty of dogs and the importance of animal companions. There’ll also be an opportunity to ask questions and get a book signed by Tom himself.
The book is aimed at 4-8 year olds but with gorgeous illustrations and an inspiring story – this is an event to bring the whole family to.

‘War Dog’ tells the true story of one dog’s incredible bravery in WWII. Judy is a dog who lives on a ship called HMS Grasshopper. As the ship’s mascot, Judy has many duties. She catches rats, watches out for soldiers who may fall overboard and listens out for danger.
Judy loves her crew and they love her. She knows that she brings comfort to the men, making her job very important during these hard times. But when her soldiers are taken prisoner and she is separated from her beloved Frank, she must find the strength to keep going.
Set in the Second World War in the South–East Asian theatre of the Pacific War, Judy is magnificently brought to life by Carolina Rabei’s mesmerising illustrations.
The book gives children the opportunity to learn more about the role of animals involved in conflict, and alongside the story, there is a non-fiction spread.
Judy was awarded the Dickin medal for ‘magnificent courage and endurance in Japanese prison camps, which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligence and watchfulness.’
The event is FREE to attend but everyone who would like to come along will need to book an individual ticket so we know the numbers. Places are limited.
There is an option to buy a ticket that includes a copy of ‘War Dog’ and this includes free entry. (The book will be available to collect on the day).
