Despite this\, Kammy’s star has only risen as he’s met every challenge with courage\, determination and his infectious smile. \n\n\n\nWith entertaining stories of his playing career from Pompey to Leeds and beyond; his management at Bradford City and Stoke; his crazy travels around the world; of Soccer Saturday banter; presenting Ninja Warrior; and the incredible friendships he’s made along the way\, Kammy is an unforgettable ride from one of Britain’s best-loved broadcasters. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of 2023 Farsley Literature Festival.

SUMMARY:An evening with Paterson Joseph
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2023 Farsley Literature Festival we are thrilled to announce an evening with beloved British actor and writer\, Paterson Joseph. Recently seen on Vigil and Noughts and Crosses\, he has also starred in Peep Show and Law & Order UK and he plays Arthur Slugworth in the forthcoming Wonka movie. \n\n\n\nThe Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sanchois is Paterson’s debut novel. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s 1746 and Georgian London is not a safe place for a young Black man\, especially one who has escaped slavery. After the twinkling lights in the Fleet Street coffee shops are blown out and the great houses have closed their doors for the night\, Sancho must dodge slave catchers and worse. The man he hoped would help – a kindly duke who taught him to write – is dying. \n\n\n\nSancho is desperate and utterly alone. So how does Charles Ignatius Sancho meet the King\, write and play highly acclaimed music\, become the first Black person to vote in Britain and lead the fight to end slavery?\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt’s time for him to tell his story\, one that begins on a tempestuous Atlantic Ocean\, and ends at the very centre of London life. And through it all\, he must ask: born amongst death\, how much can you achieve in one short life?\n \n\n\n\nThis event is part of 2023 Farsley Literature Festival. \nDoors open at 7pm\, event starts at 8pm.

SUMMARY:Recollections of the Greenham Pioneers with Rebecca Mordan
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2023 Farsley Literature Festival we are excited to bring you actor\, Artistic Director of Scary Little Girls and author of Out of the Darkness: Greenham Voices\, Rebecca Mordan. \n\n\n\nIn 1981\, a group of women marched from Cardiff to the Greenham Common RAF base in Newbury to protest the siting of US nuclear missiles on British soil. They formed what became the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp and stayed there for almost twenty years\, in what would become the largest\, most effective woman-led protest since the Suffrage campaign. Out of the Darkness reunites the women of Greenham to share their recollections of the highs and lows of camp life\, explore how they organised\, and uncover the non-violent ways they challenged military\, police and cultural forces\, all in the name of peace. \n\n\n\nWhether freeing MoD geese or dancing on silos\, whether composing songs to put their cases across in court or kissing in the face of advancing police\, this is the story of the power of creativity\, wit and courage\, and the sisterhood the Greenham women created. This book celebrates the Greenham pioneers of peaceful protest and hopes to inspire a new generation of activists. \n\n\n\nCo-authored with Kate Kerrow\, her first book\, Out of the Darkness: Greenham Voices\, was published in 2021. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter graduating from Sheffield University with a BA in English Literature\, Rebecca spent 3 years at Bristol Old Vic. She has worked as an actor in film\, theatre and television\, and founded award-winning production hub Scary Little Girls\, to create roles and opportunities for women and populate stories with diverse female characters. \nWith SLG\, Rebecca has written\, directed\, produced and performed while working with a wide range of partners including the BFI\, Glastonbury Festival and Hall for Cornwall (for whom she is an Associate Artist). \nShe recently co-wrote and presented The Greenham Effect for the BBC’s Archive on Four\, drawing on the 200 plus testimonials she helped gather from Greenham Women as part of the Greenham Women Everywhere project she co-foundered. \n\nRebecca’s first piece of fiction for radio was featured in The UK Project\, in which she was asked to represent the Cornish voice\, out this year.  She is a founder member of KerPow\, Cornish female artists tackling sex and gender discrimination and has been a campaigner against male violence for over 25 years.\nThanks to this she is often a ‘rent-a-feminist’ guest for BBC Radio\, including You and Yours\, 5 Live and Women’s Hour\, and Sky News.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2023 Farsley Literature Festival we are excited to announce an evening with actor\, comedian\, musician\, writer and television presenter Adrian Edmondson. \n\n\n\nHow did a child brought up in a strict Methodist household – and who spent his formative years incarcerated in repressive boarding schools – end up joining the comedy revolution? Could it be in his Scandinavian (… possibly berserker) heritage? \n\n\n\nDiscover the story behind Adrian Edmondson’s journey to comedy in this riotous evening of storytelling to celebrate the release of his upcoming memoir\, Berserker!  \n\n\n\nLive on stage\, Edmondson will take audiences from his days breaking the rules at his brutal boarding school to the comedy circuit of the eighties when he finally found his place in world. SUMMARY:A Biography of Yorkshire with Rick Broadbent
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2023 Farsley Literature Festival\, join us in the shop to hear Rick Broadbent in conversation about Now Then. \n\n\n\nWritten from the perspective of an exiled Yorkshire-man this bestselling\, award winning author returns to his native county to discover and reveal\, its soul. \n\n\n\nNow Then is a biographical mosaic of Yorkshire. Broadbent\, goes in search of the soul of England’s biggest county and produces an all-encompassing portrait of a place that has been victimised and stereotyped since the days of Williams the Conqueror. Incorporating social history\, memoir\, reportage and author interviews\, Now Then paints a picture of what it means to be from Yorkshire – both now and back then. \n\n\n\nNow Then is not a hagiography and Broadbent visits devastated mining communities\, an inner-city homeless shelter and the county’s most isolated sheep farm\, as well as examining the truth about well-known Yorkshire figures and institutions. From the Bronte sisters and Marks & Spencer to the Yorkshire pudding\, accent and Ripper\, this is a funny\, wise and searching account of the county that gave the world its first football club and its last witch-burning. Ultimately\, this is an affectionate but unsparing look at a county\, its people and their flinty vowels. It is about the real Yorkshire and its daily life\, as well as Dracula and Geoffrey Boycott. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRick Broadbent has written for The Times for 20 years and authored and ghost-written 12 books. He has been short listed for the William Hill Prize three times and has won a British Sports Book award. \n \nHis books have included a biography of Emil Zatopek\, a Czech Olympic hero and political activist\, and That Near-Death Thing\, about the most dangerous motorcycle race in the world.\n \nRick was born in Leeds and now lives in Dorset.\n \n \nThis event is part of 2023 Farsley Literature Festival.

SUMMARY:A Short History of Queer Women - with Kirsty Loehr
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2023 Farsley Literature Festival\, hear author Kirsty Loehr in conversation about her hilarious and informative book\, A Short History of Queer Women. \n\n\n\nDispensing with the patriarchal “drivel”\, this is a little book that packs a big punch against centuries of outrageous straightwashing. The book that reinserts queer women such as Virginia Woolf\, Anne Frank\, and Lorraine Hansberry\, back into history. \n\n\n\nNo\, they weren’t ‘just friends’! Queer women have been written out of history since\, well\, forever. ‘But historians famously care about women!’\, said no one. From Anne Bonny and Mary Read who sailed the seas together disguised as pirates\, to US football captain Megan Rapinoe declaring ‘You can’t win a championship without gays on your team’\, via countless literary salons and tuxedos\, A Short History of Queer Women sets the record straight on women who have loved other women through the ages. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nKirsty Loehr is a writer and English teacher. She loves women\, football\, history and comedy—but not necessarily in that order. She currently lives in Brighton with her son AND SHE IS SINGLE. \nThis event is part of 2023 Farsley Literature Festival.

Laura will be talking about and reading from her stunning must read historical novel of 2023 ‘The Square of Sevens’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Square of Sevens follows Red\, the daughter of a Cornish fortune-teller\, who travels with her father making a living predicting fortunes using the ancient method: the Square of Sevens.\nWhen her father suddenly dies\, Red becomes the ward of a gentleman scholar. Now raised as a lady amidst the Georgian splendour of Bath\, her fortune-telling is a delight to high society\, but she cannot ignore the questions that gnaw at her soul: who was her mother? How did she die? SUMMARY:Finding Home - A Windrush Story with Alford & Howard Gardner
DESCRIPTION:On 24 May 1948\, the Empire Windrush sailed from Kingston\, Jamaica\, to harbour at Tilbury Docks. It carried 1\,027 passengers and two stowaways\, and more than two thirds of them were West Indies nationals. On 22nd June 1948 they disembarked onto the docks\, Alford Dalrymple Gardner was among them. \n\n\n\nAlford’s story traverses both the uplifting highs and intolerant lows that West Indian migrants of his generation encountered upon travelling to Britain to forge out a life. From joining the British military during World War II to returning back to Jamaica once it was won-only to come back to the UK when the government decided it needed him again-Alford witnessed milestone events of the 20th century that shaped the country he still lives in today. In the context of a supposedly ‘post-Imperial’ Britain where the lives of West Indian migrants hang precariously on the whims of the Home Office\, Alford’s heartening testimony is a celebration of those who endured hardships so that generations to come could call this place home. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted that Alford and Howard will join us in the shop to talk about this memoir ‘Finding Home’ which will be released on 22nd June. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in 1926 in Kingston\, Jamaica\, Alford Gardner first came to England in 1944 to support the war effort\, serving in the RAF. After a brief stay back in Jamaica\, he decided to return to England to help to rebuild the country. He boarded the HMT Empire Windrush intending to build a life in the country he once called home. Despite a less than accommodating welcome back\, he persisted and succeeded in forging a better life for his family. Now 97 and twice widowed\, Alford spends all his leisure time at the bingo hall. When not playing bingo\, he can be found watching sports or spending time with his family. A much fuller sense of Alford’s life is conveyed in his autobiography: Finding Home. \nHoward Gardner\, not the American psychologist\, but a retired engineer from Leeds. Taking after his father\, Howard is a big sports fan\, especially rugby league and supports Leeds Rhinos. He also follows Leeds United\, Yorkshire Cricket team and the West Indian Cricket test team. He has spent the last two years helping his father record his memoirs.

SUMMARY:An evening with Robert Welbourn
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the shop for an evening with Robert Welbourn to chat about his second novel Belonging. \n\n\n\nRobert’s debut\, Ideal Angels\, published in 2018 and received overwhelmingly positive reviews. His writing asks the question\, what is it to be human? With a BA and MA in literature\, Welbourn’s writing tries to find out how to survive in a world that feels like it doesn’t care. His fast-pace\, ironic prose may look shallow on the surface\, but in reality it makes us look into ourselves and discover who we really are. \n\n\n\nRobert’s stand-out achievement in the novel is his ability to map out the hundreds of different ways in which his protagonist strives to make connection with others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNoah is young\, attractive\, and madly in love with two people. These two people are both madly in love with Noah\, yet neither knows about the other. Can Noah balance two secret relationships while trying to discover who he really is as a person? When family tragedy strikes\, how will Noah cope with all that follows? Belonging is a novel about being young and in love in a world that’s cold and uncaring. Can you ever truly know someone if you don’t know yourself? Can you find a meaning in a world that seems random and thoughtless? Does anybody\, like\, actually care?

SUMMARY:Book Launch Event: Down to Earth by Andrew Crowther
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a glass of something cold to celebrate the publication of Down to Earth by Bradford born author Andrew Crowther. Andrew will be talking about and reading from his debut novel\, answering questions\, and signing copies. \n\n\n\nAndrew has been making up stories ever since he was a child\, forever dreaming of fantastic events\, miraculous escapes and happy endings. He is fascinated by the power of the imagination to transform this crazy life of ours into something that has shape and meaning. \n\n\n\nNew school teacher Jenny Threadneedle has lived for almost as long as she can remember in High Hants\, an enclosed idealised Little Britain located in a very\, very remote region. Founded by wealthy white English businessmen and Red Top journalists\, aghast by immigration and climate catastrophe\, life in High Hants is just perfect – unless you ask questions\, or begin to doubt this “1950s paradise” is as wonderful as claimed. A dystopian satire of tiny minds and limited outlook. Is it possible to escape and live a life more Down to Earth? \n\n\n\nDown to Earth is a cautionary tale about building a castle and pulling up the drawbridge behind you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAndrew has also written several plays which have been performed around Yorkshire\, including Welcome to Paradise (2003)\, Funny Men (2008)\, Working Lives (2011) and Night Secrets (2022). \nIn another part of his life\, he is the Secretary of the W.S. Gilbert Society. He has written extensively about the dramatist of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas\, most notably in a well-regarded 2011 biography entitled Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan. \nDown to Earth is Crowther’s first novel. He says he doesn’t write about the real world because he’s never been there.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in the shop for a very special evening of readings and discussion with the founder of Analog Sea\, Jonathan Simons. \n\n\n\nAnalog Sea is an American non-profit press with a mandate to support the printed word and local literary culture\, including bookshops and libraries\, as well as championing fair compensation for writers and artists and interrogating the effects of the digital revolution on the arts and letters. Based out of Austin\, Texas\, and Freiburg\, Germany\, Analog Sea was founded in 2018 by writer and editor Jonathan Simons. \n\n\n\nThey are delighted to announce the release of the fourth edition of its award-winning literary journal\, The Analog Sea Review\, a print-only hardback edition of poetry\, essays\, interviews\, short fiction\, and artwork. \n\n\n\nJonathan will read from his essay “Toward a New Renaissance” from the introduction of The Analog Sea Review\, Number Four\, and other texts from the journal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nAs an offline publisher distributing exclusively to physical bookshops\, Analog Sea “wishes for books to be traded between human beings and not relegated to robots and algorithms. Digital platforms are great for efficiency and massification\, but they believe that efficiency and massification are in no way acceptable strategies for handling the arts and letters.  Analog Sea explores these questions through their various publications\, including their offline literary journal\, The Analog Sea Review.”\n
