SUMMARY:An Evening with Fun Lovin' Criminal Huey Morgan
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be welcoming Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ frontman Huey Morgan to Farsley to celebrate the release of his fascinating autobiography. \n\n\n\nMusician\, DJ\, producer and award-winning BBC broadcaster\, Huey will be sharing stories from his memoir\, interspersed with songs on his guitar (including a preview of his new single!) \n\n\n\nWhen the Fun Lovin’ Criminals released their smash hit debut album Come Find Yourself in 1996\, its fusion of hip-hop\, funk\, blues and rock quickly saw it become one of the most iconic and influential records of the decade. Now\, in a humorous and honest memoir\, Huey Morgan describes his remarkable rock star journey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHuey’s is a story that begins in the early 1990s in New York\, freshly returned from his time in the Marines and struggling to return to regular life. As Huey tries to kickstart his musical career\, he finds himself falling into the criminal underworld to get by. But as his band begins – against all the odds – to take off\, can he extricate himself before his shot at stardom goes begging? \n\n\n\nWritten in Huey’s indomitable and distinctive style\, his book brings the grit and glamour of 90s New York brilliantly to life. And\, we can’t wait to welcome you to the Old Woollen to hear from Huey in person. \n\n\n\nDoors at 7pm

SUMMARY:Truman's Book Club Social - Wed 10th Sept
DESCRIPTION:At Truman’s Book Club Social in September\, hosted at Cargo Wines here in Farsley\, we’ll be discussing the book The Ministry of Time – by Kaliane Bradley. \n\n\n\nA ticket to attend Truman’s Book Club Social is £15. This includes the book (that will be available for you to collect in the shop once you’ve made a booking online) and your first drink on the evening (beer\, wine or soft drink). If you already have the book\, you can select a ticket that will include a £10 Truman’s Gift Voucher instead of a book. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book \n\n\n\nThe romantic\, historical\, comedic\, literary\, genre-defying bestseller \n\n\n\nA civil servant is offered a lucrative job in a mysterious new government ministry gathering ‘expats’ from across history to test whether time-travel is feasible. \n\n\n\nHer role is to work as a ‘bridge’: living with\, supporting and monitoring expat ‘1847’ – Commander Graham Gore\, a former Victorian polar explorer. Gore\, an adventurer by trade\, soon adjusts to this bizarre new world of washing machines\, feminism and Spotify; and during a long\, sultry summer the pair move from awkwardness to friendship to something more. \n\n\n\nBut as the true shape of the project that brought them together begins to emerge\, Gore and the bridge are forced to confront their past choices and imagined futures. Can love triumph over the histories that have shaped them? And how do you defy that history when it is living in your house? \n\n\n\nWhen & Where? \n\n\n\nThis Truman’s Book Club Social will take place on Wednesday 10th September\, 6.30pm (for a 7pm start)\, at Cargo Wines\, Sunny Bank Mills. One of the benefits of us hosting our Book Club in a Wine Bar means that when the book chat is done\, if you wish\, you’re free to stay on to continue to enjoy the company and the conversation\, and maybe another drink or two. \n\n\n\nWe’d like a relaxed evening of booky chat\, so if the thought of sitting round in a big circle feels a little intimidating\, this is the Book Club for you. Our aim is to have a more informal feel\, with smaller groups sat chatting around tables. We can help you find a seat and make sure everyone feels comfortable. \n\n\n\nWe’re thinking an hour of chat about the month’s book (and the topics and experiences it leads to). In the future\, we’d love to be able to welcome guest authors to join us to discuss their books. \n\n\n\nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:An Evening with Dave Worthington\, Former Premier League Scout
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Old Woollen as Dave Worthington takes us inside the secret world of a top-tier football scout. Dave who has witnessed 20 epoch-making years of the Premier League has collaborated with Pudsey-born Sports Journalist Phil Dawkes to tell his story and will be chatting to him and ITV Calendar’s Chris Dawkes about his life\, career and the craft. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHE BOOK \n\n\n\nWith a foreword by ex-Bolton and England manager Sam Allardyce\, the book is of major interest to all football fans. \n\n\n\nLifting the lid on the dynamic\, clandestine\, pressurised\, sometimes humdrum\, often crazy life of a football talent-spotter\, in this revealing autobiography we find Dave: \n\n\n\n\nUnearthing hidden gems for Sam Allardyce to polish at Bolton\n\n\n\n\n\nHelping Jose Mourinho spend big as part of Chelsea’s ‘Roman Empire’\n\n\n\n\n\nProviding the means for Leicester to shock the world in 2015-16\n\n\n\n\n\nWitnessing first-hand at Everton how messy things get when you recruit three faltering number 10s and strikers who don’t score\n\n\n\n\nFew scouts have experienced Premier League history in the 21st century as Dave Worthington has. But then few people have two footballing parents. Fewer still\, grow up as one of three brothers who all become professionals; one an England international and great maverick of the game. Even fewer go on to make close to 500 Football League appearances\, securing cult status as Dave did at Grimsby. \n\n\n\n‘Worthy’ is about the making of a scout and how a unique upbringing\, lengthy playing career and lifelong love of the game equipped Dave to judge the best of the best. \n\n\n\nAuthor Phil Dawkes spent 15 years working for BBC Sport online\, principally covering football. He has written extensively on the Premier League\, Champions League and many more major international tournaments. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 7pm.

SUMMARY:Windrush Day with Howard Gardner
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Windrush Day\, we are very pleased to announce that we will have a guest Bookseller for the Day in the shop. \n\n\n\nHoward Gardner\, co-writer of ‘Finding Home’\, the ground-breaking memoir that gives a vivid account of an important part of British history\, will be in the shop between 11am and 3pm\, so do pop in to say hello. \n\n\n\nWe will be hosting a FREE drinks reception at 3pm where Howard will give a reading from the book. There’s no charge to attend but we are asking people to book a spot. Ordering free tickets will confirm your places for 3pm. \n\n\n\nIn 2018\, on the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Windrush to the UK\, Howard’s father Alford Gardner\, who was a passenger on the ship\, became a bit of a celebrity\, with many stories of his life being well-documented. It was then\, Howard helped his Dad put pen to paper and the book ‘Finding Home’ came about. \n\n\n\n‘Finding Home: A Windrush Story’\, is not just about Alford\, it traverses both the uplifting highs and intolerant lows that West Indian migrants of his generation encountered upon travelling to Britain to forge out a life. \n\n\n\nAt age 18\, Alford served Britain in the Royal Air Force during WWII\, returning to Jamaica once it was won\, arriving back in the UK on the Windrush on 22nd June 1948 at Tilbury Docks\, when the government decided it needed him again. \n\n\n\nAlford sadly passed away in 2024\, at the age of 98\, after witnessing many milestone events of the 20th century that shaped the country. His heartening testimony is a celebration of those who endured hardships so that generations to come\, could call this place home. And his story\, lives on through his son. \n\n\n\nThe first 50 customers on the day will receive an exclusive tote bag.

The country teeters on a knife edge. When a young heiress is found murdered at the theatre\, the Queen’s spymaster Robert Cecil calls upon former agent Sophia de Wolfe to investigate. \n\n\n\nA cryptic note found on the dead girl’s body connects to Sophia’s previous life as a spy\, and her quest soon takes her into dangerous waters. SUMMARY:An evening with Lindsey Burrow
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to be able to bring you an event with Pride of Britain Award Winner and inspirational woman\, Lindsey Burrow. Lindsey will join us in the Old Woollen for an evening to talk about her first publication Take Care\, the life-affirming memoir of the working mother of three young children who has inspired the nation through her selfless commitment to husband Rob Burrow (CBE)\, the rugby league legend she cared for throughout his heroic battle with motor neurone disease (MND). \n\n\n\nTake Care is A Memoir of Love\, Family & Never Giving Up explores the deepest reserves of resilience\, personal sacrifice and hope that Lindsey exhibited on a daily basis when her family’s life was upended by the terminal MND diagnosis. Juggling her day job for the NHS as a physiotherapist\, with round-the-clock care for Rob\, who couldn’t move or talk\, and could only eat with Lindsey’s assistance\, she simultaneously raised her brilliant young family and helped to raise awareness for MND. The efforts of Rob\, Lindsey and Kevin Sinfield have raised over £15 million for charity. \n\n\n\nIn 2023\, Lindsey ran the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon\, which was co-founded by Rob and his former Leeds Rhinos teammate Kevin Sinfield to help raise awareness for MND. Together\, the Burrow family and Sinfield have helped to raise over £15 million for charity. In the process\, they have inspired the nation\, offering families hope by sharing their MND journey. In 2023\, Lindsey Burrow received a Pride of Britain award\, together with Rob and Kevin. Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield were awarded CBEs by HRH The Prince of Wales in January 2024. Lindsey featured in the acclaimed BBC 2 documentary\, ‘Rob Burrow: Living with MND.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2024\, Lindsey presented her debut ITV1 documentary\, ‘Who Cares for Our Carers?’ which highlighted the emotional and practical hardships faced by thousands of her fellow unpaid carers\, whose hidden work is worth an estimated £162bn a year in the UK\, the equivalent of another NHS. Told in Lindsey’s characteristically humble\, charming and inspirational style\, Take Care explores her life and shares her honest experiences of finding strength in the good and the bad times\, in order to offer readers and families hope to overcome challenges in their own lives. The book sheds a light on the many families across the UK who care for their loved ones with little support. Finally\, the book is a rousing call to action\, for us all as a society to take better care of one another. \n\n\n\n‘Thank you for what you are teaching us\, about what it is to fight\, what it is to love\, and what it is possible for us to do and to be as human beings’ Michael Sheen\, Pride of Britain Awards 2023\, to Rob and Lindsey Burrow \n\n\n\n‘Lindsey’s strength and love shines through’ Lorraine\, ITV \n\n\n\n‘You are an inspirational couple’ Loose Women ITV \n\n\n\n‘Lindsey and Rob Burrow’s moving love story from teenage sweethearts to ‘superhero’ wife’ has stood the test of time – overcoming the hardest and most heartbreaking of challenges. Mirror \n\n\n\n‘A story of compassion\, perseverance and love. By sharing her story\, Lindsey is shining a light on those who are dealing with incredibly difficult situations\, putting other’s needs before their own and making great personal sacrifices every day. I hope this book provides all those going through their own challenges with some comfort and optimism\, and that it inspires us all to look out for one another’ HRH Prince William

DESCRIPTION:We are excited to bring you another local debut author to provide cosy reading in dark February. Join us in the shop to chat with Rachel Bower about her debut novel ‘It Comes from The River’ which is out on 30th January. Infused with the folklore of Northern England\, It Comes from the River is an unforgettable\, uncanny debut about violence\, resilience and hope – and the power of women when they work together. \n\n\n\nAlex is trying to hold her growing family together with a husband who is becoming more and more difficult to keep happy. Lauren hopes that the new man in her life might present a fresh start for her and her two boys. SUMMARY:Launch event for 'Swell' by Maria Ferguson in conversation with Helen Mort
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that local author Maria Ferguson will be in the shop to chat to readers and celebrate the launch of her latest poetry collection ‘Swell’. Maria will be in conversation with the award winning British poet and novelist\, Helen Mort. \n\n\n\nIn the consultation room I staredat the purple flowers in their purplevase and imagined my insides:an ocean\, a cave\, a storm. \n\n\n\nMaria Ferguson’s second poetry collection is a raw and powerful documentation of one woman’s experience of becoming a mother. Against a backdrop of the sounds and sensations of daily life\, she longs for her own mother’s embrace\, observes as her body changes and charts a course through loss and wilting house plants towards recovery\, empowerment and renewal. \n\n\n\nTender\, direct and winningly witty\, Swell distils the poet’s complex feelings surrounding family and domesticity\, exploring the contending weight and levity felt as she contemplates a thrillingly unfamiliar new chapter. Ferguson is a poet as alert to the absurd as to the shattering\, and these are large-hearted poems\, full of life and thought. Together\, they invite the reader to join them in a search for self-acceptance\, for freedom from shame and for a path to stability in increasingly uncertain times. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaria Ferguson is a writer and performer. Her poetry has been widely published and anthologized\, and her debut collection\, Alright\, Girl? (Burning Eye\, 2020)\, was highly commended in the Forward Prize. On the stage\, her one-woman show Fat Girls Don’t Dance (Oberon\, 2017) won the Saboteur Award for Best Spoken Word Show; Essex Girl (Oberon\, 2019) was shortlisted for the Tony Craze Award and won Show of the Week at the VAULT Festival. She has been commissioned by the Royal Academy of Art\, Stylist magazine and BBC Radio. She currently lives in Leeds. \n\n\n\n‘A beautiful\, powerful\, profound collection of poems There is an honesty that is both heart-breaking and more hopeful than anything else I’ve read on this subject. She makes me weep and wonder in equal measure’ Hollie McNish‘Tender\, lyrical\, a family mise-en-scene\, exploring the tiny narratives that write us. These poems are an umbilical\, a feeding. Beautiful’ Joelle Taylor\, author of C+nto‘Maria Ferguson articulates the previously unsayable in these radical\, tender poems. Swell gives voice to the full complexity of motherhood – the love next to the guilt\, the ambivalence next to joy\, even the desire to sometimes run away’ Kim Moore\, author of All The Men I Never Married‘These poems have an energy which is infectious. Reading them will make you feel free and fearless – Ferguson shows us how language can give new meaning to our tenderest moments’ Helen Mort \n\n\n\nHelen Mort is an award-winning author based in Sheffield. Helen has published three poetry collections (Division Street\, 2013 and No Map Could Show Them\, 2016) and The Illustrated Woman (2022\, shortlisted for the Forward Prize). She has also written a novel (Black Car Burning\, 2019)\, a short story collection (Exire\, 2019) she has also written drama and creative non fiction. \n\n\n\nHelen’s first full length non-fiction book A Line Above The Sky (Ebury\, 2022) was featured in the Guardian and Evening Standard’s ‘books to watch’ lists. SUMMARY:An afternoon with Scottish crime writer Sir Ian Rankin
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2024 Farsley Literature Festival we are proud to announce\, an afternoon at the Old Woollen with award winning author Sir Ian Rankin as he introduces us to the brand new John Rebus thriller ‘Midnight and Blue’\, which will be released in October. \n\n\n\nThey say there is nowhere more dangerous for a cop than prison. John Rebus is about to find out just how true that is. \n\n\n\nJohn Rebus’s appeal is stalled and his lawyers have stopped calling\, as he hopes for the best but fears the worst. As the days bleed into each other\, and the nights stretch before him\, even the legendary detective struggles to keep his head. That is\, until a murder in a locked cell presents a new mystery. They say old habits die hard. Everyone else is about to find out just how true that is too. On the outside\, Siobhan Clarke investigates the disappearance of a girl who never came from school. Jasmine Andrews’ friends swear they haven’t seen her\, and she hasn’t contacted them. But something about this case doesn’t add up. Is Jasmine\, missing or on the run? Is she in danger\, or is this something stranger? \n\n\n\nBack inside\, as new friends and old enemies begin to circle\, Rebus finds himself at the centre of a case where the prisoners and the guards could all be suspects. But how do you find a killer in a place full of them? \n\n\n\nMidnight and Blue is a masterfully executed twin-engine crime novel that combines Rankin’s gold standard Edinburgh-based police procedurals and a tough\, tightly wound locked cell mystery. Rankin’s work is known for its integrity and ambition\, as well as the topical socio-political commentary\, and Midnight and Blue continues the series with a sense of a generational changing of the guards\, the march of technology and its potential to be saviour and predator\, the pressure on public institutions through budget cuts and a decaying sense of civic duty. It’s a story about groups and institutions – boys’ clubs and girl groups\, schools and prisons\, gangs and territory\, power and control. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSir Ian Rankin is the multimillion-copy worldwide bestseller of over thirty novels and creator of John Rebus. His books have been translated into thirty-six languages and have been adapted for radio\, the stage and the screen. In 2024\, a new Rebus six-part TV series was broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. \n\n\n\nSir Ian Rankin is the recipient of four Crime Writers’ Association Dagger Awards\, including the Diamond Dagger\, the UK’s most prestigious award for crime fiction.
